Apart from living people, music was and still is the most important thing in my life. Since I was a little boy I always thought about songs, heard music in my head – and was distracted at school most of the time because of that. I always wanted to become a musician and write songs.
....but then I ended up as a drummer.... ;-)
I've been playing the drums since my 10th birthday - at that time I attended my first solo-drum lesssons in Konstanz at the music school. Since that time I've been playing the drums without a break.
A couple of years later I got my first live experiences as a member of a percussion group lead by my drum teacher – I was 12 years old. After some time this teacher left for another music school and I continued with another teacher. At that time I had my first contact with Heavy Metal music: The program "Hard 'n' Heavy" on Tele 5. I saw some videos from W.A.S.P. and Iron Maiden and thought: "What a terrible stuff is that?" Well, a few days later I bought my first Metallica CD and have stuck to hard rock music since then.
In the late 90's me and my parents moved from Konstanz to Marburg where I continued getting drum lessons – this time with the main focus on rock music.
Some time later I got to know some other Metal-Fans and with them I founded my first band "Merciless Gnom" (I know, silly name. But as you can see I have a faible for silly names – see: "Edguy"). From the beginning we worked on our own songs and after about 2 years we had enough songs to play live shows. And so we did: together with the Gnoms I performed my first live performances in a metal band. For about 6 years we played concerts in the area and recorded 3 demo-tapes. A short time later I became a member of a second regional group named "Exiled", which was founded by one of the guitar players of the Gnoms with his girlfriend as a vocalist. Furthermore we founded a coverband as a fun project, but unfortunately we had no live performances
I also played in a big band at my school – I liked and still like to have the chance to play as many different styles as possible.
In 1998 I got a call from Edguy's Tobi (vocalist) – I had never heard anything about them before. He told me that they were looking for a drummer, so an audition date was scheduled, and after that I was a member of Edguy.
Since that time I have been playing in one of Germany's most successful hard rock bands "Edguy". We have and continue to tour the world – Europe, Asia, USA, Canada, South America, Australia, Russia etc. - and we're one of the first western rockbands who played in Israel and China. I managed to do what I always dreamed about: to play rock music in a rock band!
The latest Edguy release "Rocket Ride" entered the German charts at position 8 and went into the top 10 in several other countries worldwide – as did the CD's before that.
I have also played drums on some other CD's (Taraxacum, Squealer) and played a couple of shows for Squealer.
For the future I hope to keep playing with the guys in Edguy and to get the chance to play for other bands and artists as well. I'd also like to introduce myself to the people by playing at drum-workshops and giving drum-clinics around the world. Thank you for your support and interest!
Sincerely,
Felix Bohnke
